May 6th primaries officially [un]surprising…
By Porscha | May 7, 2008
So, the May 6th primaries in Indiana and North Carolina are over. Who’s surprised? Not me.
I have actually, for the first time in my life, followed the primaries religiously. After Lin and I voted yesterday, we couldn’t wait to get home and watch the results float in on CNN. But, I haven’t been surprised by the primary results since long before Pennsylvania. I have to admit, I was hoping Obama would claim a major victory over Hillary in the Indiana race, but it was not shocking that she won by a small margin. Also not surprising - Obama won North Carolina with a much larger margin. I watched last night as Anderson Cooper explained why Hillary pretty much can’t win the nomination at this point. Even after she went and played the John McCain game by promising a gas tax holiday. Ugh. Does she know that that money keeps up highways and roads. We’re already in a several trillion dollar deficit as a nation, does she really want to take away the gas tax for a few months so that we can save $18 on every 100 gallons of gas we buy (18 cents a gallon, folks… gas will still cost around $3.40 cents in Asheville), and then put all highway projects on hold. Now, I don’t mind if we put that widening I-26 thing on hold permanently (a ridiculous non-solution to the wrong problem, if you ask me), but seriously - do we want our roads to be worse than they are? I digress, however.
The truth is, this primary was unsurprising - Hilary won Indiana by a small margin and Barack kicked her ass in North Carolina. Quite exactly what I was expecting. I do hope Obama gets the nomination, but should Clinton be the nominee, I’ll vote for her in a second - even if only because she is NOT John McCain.
Until the DNC…

The whole gay prom thing…
By Porscha | May 7, 2008
In Louisiana, a high school principal banned a gay student from a prom - he claimed that he feared violence.
Here’s what the principal reportedly had to say when asked about his decision: “We don’t refuse students from other schools as long as they are a date of one of our students,” Theriot said during an interview. “I did refuse a guy who came under false pretenses and I asked him to leave and he did. I don’t want potential behavior problems.” He went on to say he was trying to prevent bullying, fights, and riots.
Can I just say: WHAT A COP-OUT!!!
Gay kids are just “behavior problems” now. Ugh. Weren’t we over this in the 90s? It’s 2008, dude, seriously. He’s comparing these gay students to some guy who was just trying to get in to score some jailbait ass - that’s a serious problem. They allow students who are dates of their students, so why not this girl’s date? It is only because she’s gay - not because anyone thinks the girl would really be a behavior problem. AND, on another note - have schools ever been able to prevent bullying? or fights? or even riots, for that matter? AND, why do gay students pose any threat of fights or riots? Truth is, they don’t. The idiots who bully them pose the threat, but instead of addressing any bullying problem the school might have, the schools are punishing the bullied. Sounds a lot like blaming the victim, doesn’t it? Ugh. This just makes my eyeballs burn. There are idiots in the world, and this high school principal proves my point.

4-6 pm Special Screening Ballot Measure 9
A powerful documentary that explores issues surrounding Ballot Measure 9 — a 1992 Oregon initiative designed to deny gays their civil rights. Although the measure was defeated, the movie shows just how close the state came to adopting a law that would have discriminated against one group. Heather MacDonald, the filmmaker, interviews people on both sides of the controversial issue.
7:30-10 pm For the Bible Tells Me So
Director Daniel Karslake brings his award-winning documentary to WCU.
Is the chasm separating gays and lesbians and Christianity too wide to cross? Is the Bible an excuse to hate?
Through the experiences of five normal, Christian, American families — including those of former House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt and Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson — we discover how people of faith handle the realization of having a gay child. FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO offers healing, clarity and understanding to anyone caught in the crosshairs of scripture and sexual identity.
Followed by director q & a + panel discussion

Gay Club Without Students, Judge Rescinds Order

(Okeechobee, Florida) Even though Okeechobee High School’s Gay-Straight Alliance no longer has any members, a federal lawsuit by a former GSA member is continuing.
This week a judge rescinded an earlier ruling that required the school board to allow the GSA to meet on campus while the lawsuit played out.
U.S. District Judge K. Michael Moore agreed to a motion by school board attorney David Gibbs who argued that it is “inequitable” to force the school to permit a club to meet on school property “that has no members, no officers, no meetings and no events.”
Nevertheless the lawsuit by the GSA’s former president Yasmin Gonzalez, who now attends university, will go to trial in June.
In 2006 Gonzalez and her girlfriend were told they could not attend the school prom as a couple. The rejection was one of several incidents targeting LGBT students at Okeechobee High School and led to the formation of the GSA.
The school blocked the club from meeting on campus and the students sought the help of the ACLU which filed the federal suit.
The ACLU argues that the Equal Access Act stipulates that when a school allows any non-curricular club to meet on campus, it must allow all non-curricular clubs to meet on campus.
Last year Moore issued the preliminary injunction ordering the school district to allow the club to meet on school property while the civil rights lawsuit is being heard.
The school district argues that the Equal Access Act can’t be used in the case of a GSA and that Florida law requires schools to teach abstinence, “while teaching the benefits of monogamous heterosexual marriage.”
