Bele Chere is Now!

By Lin | July 26, 2008

Asheville’s amazing annual street and music festival started yesterday. Bele Chere celebrates its 3oth year this year with 6 stages and an entire downtown full of fun, food, arts & crafts, and a whole lot more including some of the best people watching opportunities anywhere.

I thought I’d mention

my performance picks for today before it got any later. So, without further ado, here

they are…

Rachel Sage

Rachel Sage & the Sequins will be on the Battery Park stage at noon today.

Independent Music Award Winner Rachel Sage writes what The Village Voice calls

“lovely and literate folk-pop-rock.” Sage is an innovative and improvisational keyboardist who performs over 150

times a year throughout the U.S., Europe, and Asia. As a Grand Pize-Winner in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, Sage has earned a loyal following for her infectious melodies and poetic lyrics.

Later in the day I suggest you head over to the Mountain Xpress/Lexington Avenue Stage. That’s where will be playing from 6:45 to 8:15pm. Although generally referred tostephanies id as an indie-pop band, Stephanie’s Id has a sound that is actually far more complex than that genre implies. The group has expanded from a darkly bittersweet piano-bar duo to a full band and become one of the most interesting, experimental and creatively edgy bands in Asheville.

For more info about this really cool and fun one-of-a-kind festival, including other performers, parking, services, maps, stage locations, shuttles, and more visit the Bele Chere Web site or read about it in the July issue of OIA here.

The August Issue is HOT

By Porscha | July 24, 2008

So, I thought I would give you all a little teaser of what you can expect in our upcoming August print issue of OIA. We all hope you’re enjoying daily news updates on the web, and some of the new features we’ve added to the site. If you haven’t seen it in a while, pop on over to www.outinasheville.com for a minute, I promise I won’t be upset.

Our features this month include another pointed op/ed by James Dye about Exodus’ reatreat from Asheville, and an interview with Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore, entitled “Reasons Not to Participate in Your Cultural Erasure.” Both are poignant and sharp.  Chuck Giezentanner returns with Giezdemon’s World, Jack Groce brings a review of both the new Batman movie and MammaMia, proving that tight black rubber and ABBA do have a place together.

On the news side of things, the August issue includes an interview with Wayne Besen about his experience in Asheville to counter Exodus International’s Freedom Conference, and an updated story about the Anderson SC man who filed a false police report against his father, including quotes from the man and someone who was trying to help him with his situation.

Overall, we think it’s an incredible issue, and we hope you will, too! Look for it to hit the streets starting July 29th.

Sordid Lives, The Series

By Porscha | July 24, 2008

Leslie Jordan Returns as Brother Boy in this Hilarious Cult Classic

YesterdayLeslie Jordan Sordid Lives, LOGO premiered Sordid Lives, its television-series reprise of the cult classic film. I forced my lovely straight friend, Charlie Foxfield, to watch the series on her birthday, and she fell in love, too. My partner has not yet seen the film, and we don’t own it on DVD. We are decidedly bad at being queer.

We had scribbled a reminder to ourselves that the show was air, and made sure we took time off of creating a beautiful print issue of OIA to watch the premier. The cast is incredible, bringing back favorites from the movie, including Olivia Newton-John, Leslie Jordan, and Rue McClanahan. After the recent death of Estelle Getty, The Golden Girls’ Sophia, we were more eager to see how the lovely Rue is aging. I’ll leave the judgment up to you. The woman was born in 1934, I give her serious respect for still being in front of a camera. I sure as hell wouldn’t be. Read the rest of this entry

McCain switches sides… again?

By Porscha | July 24, 2008

Leave it to John McCain to do something incredibly weird… really. At his recent speech to the NAACP, he virtually endorsed Barack Obama, sending Republicans off scratching their heads. The video is below, and looking at his face, I can just hear his last remaining brain cells saying, “Maybe if I talk about Black people, they’ll like me. Oh, wait, the only Black guy I know is Barack Obama… I’ll talk about him.”

By Porscha | July 24, 2008

From GayWired.com.

Vanity Fair has stepped into the fray over a controversial New Yorker Magazine cover featuring a cartoon Barack Obama as a terrorist by issuing their own faked John McCain parody cover this week. The Vanity Fair McCain cover cartoon features the presumptive Republican presidential nominee hunched over a walker with wife Cindy McCain cradling an armful of prescription pill bottles. I’m Batman!

By giezdemon | July 23, 2008

I saw “The Dark Knight” last night. It was actually a dinner/movie date. We dined at Carrabba’s, starting out with calamari and ending with italian coffee, and then headed off to watch my husband Christian Bale beat down the bad guys. I felt weird taking my date to see my husband, but there is enough Chuck to go around. I mean lets face it, who in Asheville hasn’t seen me naked?

The theater was full. They sold out 5 minutes after we bought our tickets. We arrived 20 minutes early just to be on the safe side. My brother-in-law went to buy tickets last Wednesday for the premier and they had already sold out. Asheville loves a man in black tights and a cod piece obviously. Read the rest of this entry

Why You Should Eat at McDonald’s

By Lin | July 23, 2008

When I was 10 or 11, Newtown Square, PA, my hometown, had a groundbreaking ceremony for a brand new McDonald’s. That groundbreaking ceremony was the highpoint of my summer that year because I was one of the local Girl Scouts asked to use a shiny silver shovel to break the ground for the home of the Quarter Pounder and the Big Mac.

My mom has a newspaper clipping of that proud moment. I’m standing with some other Scouts of varying ages and Mrs. Campbell, a local Troop Leader. I’m the one wearing shorts, a badge sash over a white shirt, and blue suede shoes (God, I loved those shoes) with green knee socks. Fortunately, the photo is black and white. Queer out of Film: Brideshead Revisited

By Porscha | July 20, 2008

The New York Times posted a review of Brideshead Revisited recently, but not the soon to hit DVDs everywhere movie, the miniseries - 11 parts.

In the novel, the “love triangle” includes 2 men and 1 woman. The novel makes Julia the secondary love interest, and Charles and Sebastian the primary romantic story, at least in my reading of it, and the filmmakers recognize this fact.

Jeremy Brock, who wrote the screenplay with Andrew Davies, told the NY Times: “This puts Julia center stage. When you read the novel, there is a sense that she is slightly the one who comes after Sebastian, that she is No. 2, and I think it’s not quite fair. The true love story for Charles is the one with Julia.”

I think this is another case of Hollywood throws the queer under the bus to sell one more movie ticket. Thanks, Mr. Brock.

Planned Parenthood on John McCain

By Porscha | July 20, 2008

Planned Parenthood has joined the race to defeat John McCain - and they’re doing it through video. I found this while perusing the bilerico project (thanks, Bil, for pointing this one out). Play it - over and over. By the way, if anyone finds McCain’s prescription for Viagra, please scan it and send me the image. My guess? He has no clue what to say to make the right wing happy on this one. On one hand, if he says Viagra is bad, right-wing men think he’s trying to take away their God-given right to fornicate, and if he says birth control should be covered by insurance companies, then he’s saying that sex without procreation is okay, which puts him on that slippery slope toward gay sex is okay. But, watch the video for yourself and see what I’m talking about.
