Sacred Space:
Release the Fear; Let It Go

What dramatic times we live in!  As I look at the events on Wall Street, the blatant corruption in our government, or the fear and hate mongering that passes for political campaigning in this country, I am both saddened and excited.  Saddened because the worst of humanity is on display – the ego’s folly driven by greed, lust and fear – confusing truth with falsehood.

Yet there is excitement in these times precisely because we can see the ego’s folly so clearly.  It means we have an opportunity to make a more conscious choice to be guided by the best in humanity – a loving heart that is intelligent by design.  From a life fully lived and 20+ years counseling all types of people, I truly believe that everyone knows in their heart what actions are beneficial and which ones are detrimental.

The problem is that fear stops us from knowing what is in the heart.  My prayer for this time is that each of us does whatever we can, individually and collectively, to release fear.  Until we are willing to let go what doesn’t serve us, and to embrace what does, we will be ruled by fear-full pain instead of by the loving truth.  Fear creates more of the same, as does love.

To release fear we must be willing to let go, if only for a moment, the incessant tapes the ego plays in our heads, so we can even heart the heart’s voice.  Fortunately, the ways to do this are endless.  It can be as simple as taking five minutes to consciously breathe, reconnecting with the life force flowing through our minds and bodies.  It could be finding groups that focus on service, or simply breathing together, or singing, dancing, praying, or anything that allows awareness of a higher reality than one’s ego.

Each of us has the power to completely transform our lives.  We know this is true because it has been done over and over.  Collectively, we can change not only our government, but humanity’s course – from one filled with corruption and hate to one that expresses the loving devotion mothers naturally feel for their children – we are all someone’s child.  Whether our parents could show their love or not, all of us know what we wanted and thus can intend to give it, creating a better world in the process.

When we take action from fear, we can only create more of what we fear – that is physics as well as spiritual truth.  When we act from love – whether love of a person, an ideal, or a cause – we create more of what we love, rather than what we don’t want.  So I encourage each of us to get very clear about what we want and then act, from the greatest love we can find inside, to manifest that heart’s desire.

This is especially important regarding bigotry, whether racism or sexism or homophobia or any other hateful “ism” that has plagued humanity.  Where we embody any of these, we create more of all of them, for each has the same fear at its root.  Yet we cannot fight AGAINST something and expect it to lessen – our energy just adds to it, makes it larger.

Instead, let us be clear what we are FOR, rather than against, so love can move us to take action for what we want.  In this way we serve not only our own interests, but the greater good as well.
